VEGETABLE GARDEN
January 2024
Spring has sprung around the farm; for those whom enjoy farm to table you know what time it is! It’s garden time.
Our garden is tilled and we are expanding this year from 30x40 to 50x68. We’ll be growing everything from pumpkins and corn to berries and kale.
FARMER'S MARKET
May 2024 - Oct 2024
May is just around the corner! Sassafras Crest Farm is offering a little of everything to add to your favorite culinary repertoire. We will be offering free ranged pasture-fed eggs around August/September. The organic vanilla is brewing and should be ready for the holidays!
In the meantime get your hands on some of our “Cowboy Dry Rub” for your perfect backyard grilling! See you on Friday!
THE NEW BARN
February 2024
The old barn was demolished and a new bigger barn was erected 2023. We are just now putting the finishing touches on it and should have stable mattress systems installed by Spring. The boys will have individual stall fans, and will be ready to beat this summer heat!
Next on the list a 55’ round pen outside the barn doors where the wash bay is located. This will really be key for the new beginners lesson bookings.
THE GUIDE TO CHICKEN MATH…
Coming June 2024
Chickens are coming to Sassafras Crest Farm this summer! So, let’s get right into explaining “chicken math” for those of you that don’t know! For my equestrian friends, yes “chicken math” is like “horse math” only times a hundred. Because, you know chickens are smaller and cost much less.
So… you buy a chicken from a local hatchery, but you can’t actually just buy one chicken. You have to buy ten and the local hatchery sends 25. Then, in the madness of chicken buying, you forget you bought some from another hatchery and you end up with twenty more. You also can’t leave out your local feed store. You run by your local feed store for something important. Because, what farm doesn’t go to their local feed store every other day for something? Lo’ and behold you see a chicken swap happening right in the parking lot. Yes, that’s right. You drag home another ten-fifteen “rare” chickens…
At this point you don’t even know how many you have! This is chicken math.
